From Prison to a Palace

August 24th, 2004 · 2 Comments

I think I’m going to move my stuff into a new home tomorrow. Well, I will only be there for one semester. I haven’t actually seen the place yet, and I haven’t exactly met the person I’m going to be living with, either. So tomorrow I drive up to college (once again) with my new desk (which is not assembled yet) and some other random stuff that I can just drop off, assuming I sign on the lease. I’m a little apprehensive about the whole thing, but then I remind myself that it is a huge step up from where I have been living.

A small, stark white cinder block cell (dorm room) is no place to put a college student, much less TWO, at the same time. Then you make them share a bathroom with 2 other girls, and eat from a cafeteria. WELCOME TO COLLEGE … The place you’re supposed to learn and grow. You think you’re getting a taste of the “real world” but really all you’re getting is a crappy living situation. Is it just me or does that sound like prison?
The powers that be just think since they get to fresh fish first, they can put them anywhere and charge them anything for it, because its the “convenient” thing to do. Their parents see this as what everyone else does, and therefore subject their son or daughter to this cruelty.
I suppose it was a good “learning experience” in the sense that I learned that I never want to be in that situation again. I also learned that you can always learn to dislike someone. Learned that I get along with people, generally, at least to their face. And that not everyone has good hygiene (gross).

Anyway, I am really looking forward to having a place of my own, or at least a room of my own that I’m renting from someone else. A kitchen will be nice too. Just hope this girl isn’t a psycho. Things could always be worse. I should stop before I jinx myself. Lets just hope tomorrow turns out alright.

    I was fortunate.

When I transferred to a new school as a sophmore my father took one look at the dorm and said one word, “Barracks”.

I ended renting a room in a house intead.

    The real kicker?

My house was across the street from the school, while the dorms were a block away.

That’s right. I lived closer to campus than the dorms. The students actually had to walk past my front yard to get to class.

The room in the house was considerably less expensive too.

    To heck with dorms.

I liked my dorm… My roomate was creepy, he would just stare at any guest i had… He was a nice guy but creepy… I only spent one semester my freshman year in a dorm… and then i left the school due to personal problems… but I like the sense of community… It was always nice to have someone stop by and ask you to hang out… I never having brothers, enjoyed sharring a floor with all guys… it was fun… but I know anything more than a year in a drom would be HELL!!!!
